Help for Haiti

Listening

This week at school, your student council will have a fundraiser for the earthquake survivors in Haiti. Our campus has collected donations for hurricane, tsunami, and earthquake many times. We will send our donations to Partners in Health. This is a group that has been working in Haiti for more than twenty years. The group has focused on food and medical needs. You can listen to a video about this group today. The video explains how we can know where our donation dollars, quarters and pennies can help the most. Click here for the video.

Also, last Friday in class, we listened to a story about "Hope for Haiti," a telethon fundraiser. You can listen again today. Just click here. Pay attention to the vocabulary we learned in class.

Finally, here is an extra listening lesson about the Toyota recall. We have been following this story in our class. You might appreciate listening to the BBC news about the problems with these well-known cars.

Writing

Do you have personal or family story about being in a disaster, or an accident? Write about your story this week. I have been in many earthquakes, but I have never been in a terrible earthquake. I had very few problems in the 1989 earthquake. My home and family were all fine, even though we had so much damage in San Francisco. Since I have never been in a big disaster, I wrote about my sister. She lived in an apartment that was dangerously flooded. You can read her story below. Click on comment at the bottom of this page, and write your story!

Please write about:
  • a disaster or storm that you have been in.
  • a disaster or storm that a friend or family has been in.
Tell the story with careful grammar and spelling. You can write in the comment box, but it is a little small to look at. You can also write your story in Word first. It might be easier to use! Then you can copy and paste into the comment box. It's up to you!

  1. In California, we get flash floods in many places. Just like "flash" for your camera, flash floods can come very quickly in places that are usually dry. My younger sister, Heather, used to live near a creek, which means a very, very small river. The creek usually had very little water in it. One winter about twenty-four years ago, we had big rains, like we have been having this year in California. Many homes were flooded. My sister had this happen to her. The water in the creek near her home flooded her small house. She said it was frightening and so dangerous. One night while she was sleeping at home, water came fast inside her home, and she lost furniture, food, and lots of clothes. The power of nature did not hurt my sister, and I am glad for that. We need to take care of each other, and watch out for the power we cannot stop.

  3. My city in France is not a dangerous place. We don't have any earthquakes or hurricanes. My city is in a humid place, and it rains a lot all year. But during summer, we can have sun and warm weather, but it's often followed with a storm. We have a few storms during year, but during summer they are the strongest because we have thunderstorms with a lot of rain and wind. We have already been flooded, but just a little bit. My neighbor had to call firefighter because water passed through his roof, and his house was a little damaged inside...I have already seen my garden full of water, like a pool ! It was really incredible. But, we don't have floods like in southern France where there are very strong every year and many people lose their houses. In my city, we just have a little damage, but it's rare...
We also had a big storm in 1999 everywhere in France, and many trees and roofs fell down. Some people died, too. This king of storm is rare or very local.
Northern France already had tornado one or two years ago. And tornado passed between two houses, and the house in the middle disappeared!
Tornadoes in France are very very rare, and when it's happens, it's very exceptional and scary because we are not prepared for them.

  4. I have been driving Toyota a van since I came to America. So, I am afraid of listening to radio and watching TV for Toyota's cars recall. I can not imagine living without a car because of my children. My husband and I always take them to school and pick them up from the school by car. If we didn't have a car,we would be very hard to move with our children.
Each car companies has had very long and great history of their car brand's name for a long times.
I think that it is time to show their cars how
reliable , strong and secure cars are. It is not how their expensive , automatic and nice designed cars have.
So, I wish car companies could try to make more trust secure cars for people based on their honesty each of them are as one of the reliable companies.

The governments and people around the world organized to help victims. The power of nature destroyed coral reefs under the sea around in Thailand. Now,Thailand is more beautiful than 5 years ago.It have beautiful beach, beautiful hotel, delicious food and friendly people. I refer many people around the world visit to "LAND OF SMILE" Thailand.

  6. I have never been in a terrible disaster, but as I come from mountains, I have several stories about mountain problems. For instance, a friend's teacher was recently taken by a terrible avalanche. He was back-country skiing when an avalanche slid under his feet. He fell from a rocky outcrop. He was oddly stretched out without any snow over him, but his arm and his femur were broken. He thought he was safe, but another avalanche came. He had the good reflex to get up his arms to the sky. The snow fell and covered him completely. Not really completely because a piece of his hand was appearing through the snow. With his other hand he was able to dig a little "place for the oxygen" and so, he tried to breathe. He was waiting for the mountain rescue for 45 min. It is a very long time under the snow. Often, people died of cold, before the rescue comes. Thanks to his visible glove, the mountain rescue found him. He was alive and conscious, but his speech was incoherent. The temperature of his body was around 82.4 degree (28 degree Celsuis). He was very lucky, few people can survive from an avalanche.

  7. I have not suffered a personal disaster, but I remember one which affects me a lot, maybe because it happened when I was 8 years old and also maybe because it happened very near my home city and I wasn't there.
It was a huge flash flood in a summer campground, where people supposed to have nice and peaceful time. It happened at night when all the vacationers were sleeping and without time to react. The campground was on a hillside near a small river. Suddenly it started to rain heavily and water and mud from the river flooded the campground. 87 people died and I still remember the images on the TV that went all around the world.

  8. There was a terrible earthquake in China on May 12,2008. After two days I came to the United States. I saw the news every night. Then I just realized that so many children died in school and so many parents lost their children. Fortunately, there wasn't any problem in our province. Today, we are very lucky that we still alive, and we have the chance to help the victims from many disasters.

  9. I had an injury 15 years ago. When my mother sent me to get some rice at the grocery store and I asked her if i could take my father's bicycle and she said okay. Then I took it and I went to get the rice at the store but i was speeding with it. When I was on my way back home with the rice, I was speeding too. Then something happened that made my right foot slip and it got into the front wire and it broke my ankle.
